Centre for Media Policy and Accountability (CMPA) Condemns Arbitrary Arrest of Kano Anti-Corruption Agency Boss.
The Centre for Media Policy and Accountability (CMPA) strongly condemns the arbitrary arrest of Barr. Muhuyi Magaji, Chairman of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, by the Nigerian Police Force. This action appears to be a blatant attempt to intimidate and obstruct the course of justice in a matter involving the seizure of property allegedly linked to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje.
CMPA views this arrest as a grave violation of Barr. Magaji’s fundamental human rights and a serious threat to the independence of anti-corruption agencies in Nigeria. The Nigerian Constitution guarantees the right to freedom from arbitrary arrest and detention. It is deeply concerning that these rights are being blatantly disregarded in this instance.
The alleged seizure of property linked to Mr. Ganduje, is a matter of public interest. It is crucial that anti-corruption agencies are allowed to operate freely and independently to investigate and prosecute corruption cases without fear of reprisal. The arrest of Barr. Magaji sends a chilling message to other anti-corruption officials and undermines the fight against corruption in Nigeria.
CMPA demands the immediate and unconditional release of Barr. Magaji. We urge the Nigerian Police Force to respect the rule of law and uphold the fundamental human rights of all citizens. We call upon relevant authorities to investigate this matter thoroughly and ensure that justice is served.
