The MacArthur Foundation Encompass event, held on October 8th and 9th, 2024, marked the conclusion of the foundation’s engagement in Nigeria, which began in 1994. This event brought together key stakeholders and cohorts representing areas such as governance, media, criminal justice reform, and behaviour change to reflect on the achievements, lessons learned, and future directions of the foundation’s work in Nigeria.
While discussing, a key panel admitted to significant progress, but maintained that there are gaps in terms of institutionalizing reforms and ensuring sustainable funding. They also talked about institutionalizing anti-corruption initiatives within government frameworks and ensure long-term impact without external support as well as collaborative approaches across sectors that are essential for long-term governance reform.
The role of media and grassroots initiatives will continue to be crucial in keeping anti-corruption efforts alive and fostering behavior change.
The MacArthur Foundation Encompass event provided a fitting conclusion to three decades of impactful work in Nigeria. It offered stakeholders a platform to celebrate achievements, reflect on gaps, and plan for the future. As the foundation concludes its direct involvement, the insights and experience shared during the event will guide the efforts of those committed to continuing its mission for improved governance and accountability in Nigeria.
