Team.

CMPA Board Members are academics and practitioners with many years of experiences in professional journalism practice, research, teaching, capacity building training, and consultancy services for many local and international organisations.

CMPA as an organisation is led and managed by a 6-member Board of Trustees comprising dedicated and experienced experts in various fields. The Board is supported by a competent team of three (3) employees who oversee routine activities of the organisation.
The CMPA’s Executive Director is Suleiman A. Suleiman who holds a Ph.D. in Media and Public Policy from the University of East Anglia, UK. He has published research in reputable peer-reviewed journals and consulted for DFID, UNDP and UNODC on anti-corruption policy in Nigeria, media and governance reforms, etc. Other members have similar wide-ranging experiences locally and internationally.

CMPA TEAM MEMBERS

The Team of Consultants comprises experts that operate within the Centre. The members of the team are experts who specialize in different areas of media, communication and journalism research and practice. They are also experts in consultancy research design, management and execution of various projects. Each consultancy will be conducted by persons on the team that includes Director of Research, Principal Investigator and co-investigators.

Suleiman Amu SULEIMAN, PhD

is the CMPA’s Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer. He is also the Chairman, Editorial Board/Deputy Editor-in-Chief and Columnist at the Daily Trust newspapers, a leading national daily in Nigeria, Abuja. Dr. Suleiman has PhD. Media and Politics, M. A. Applied Communication and B. A. Mass Communication from the University of East Anglia, Norwich, Coventry University, UK, and Bayero University, Kano, respectively. He taught various courses in media and communication at four universities in Nigeria and the United Kingdom. He was DFID Research Fellow on Collective Action and Anti-Corruption Behaviour Change Communication at the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC), Abuja, Nigeria. Abdulmutallib A. ABUBAKAR, PhD

is the Deputy Executive Director/Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the CMPA. He researches and teaches at the Department of Mass Communication, University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), Nigeria for more than 15 years. He also serves as the Coordinator Research, Publication and Documentation at the UNIMAID’s Centre for Peace, Diplomatic and Development Studies (CPDDS). Abubakar earned PhD, M.Sc. and B. A. Degrees in Mass Communication where he majored in broadcast media, print media, and Social Media Studies and Journalism from University of Maiduguri, UNESCO Centre of Excellence in Media and Cinematography, Department of Mass Communication, University of Lagos, Lagos and Bayero University, Kano (BUK) respectively. Abubakar was awarded with the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) Prize for the Best Graduating Student in Mass Communication in BUK. He also served as a Court reporter, political reporter and National Assembly correspondent of the Daily Trust Newspapers, Abuja, Nigeria. Abubakar has also worked with various international and national governmental and non-governmental organisations and development partners such as UNICEF and Coalition Resources (CR-UK) as rapporteur, facilitator, research assistant and research team member. His research interests are on media studies, media and health, political communication, media and conflict, media and Islam, journalism and film studies. Naziru M. Abubakar

is the Director, Policy and Strategic Planning of CMPA. Naziru Mikail Abubakar is the Executive Director/Editor-in-Chief of Daily Trust newspapers. He has previously worked at the BBC World Service for 10 years in Nigeria and the UK, covering global and regional news for different BBC outlets before becoming its Nigeria Editor in 2016, leading the organization’s teams in Nigeria, Niger, Ghana and Cameroon. Yahaya ABUBAKAR, PhD. Fellow

 is the Director of Research and Programmes of CMPA. He is a Ph.D. candidate at the Department of Mass Communication, Bayero University, Kano. He also teaches at the Department of Mass Communication, University of Maiduguri. He is a Project Officer at the Centre for Peace, Diplomatic and Development Studies, (CPDDS), UNIMAID. Yahaya earned M. A. and B. A. degrees in Digital Media and Mass Communication from University of Nicosia, Cyprus and University of Maiduguri respectively. His research interest is on digital media, media economics, media and conflicts and journalism. Yahaya is also a Board Member of the Centre for Media Policy and Accountability (CMPA). Jamila Mohammed DAHIRU, PhD. Fellow

is the Assistant Director, Research and Programmes of CMPA. She is also a lecturer with Ahmadu Bello University Zaria for over six years. She holds first and second degrees in Mass communication from Bayero University Kano and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria respectively. She is currently a PhD. candidate at Bayero University, and a fellow with African Centre for Leadership Strategy and Development. Jamila shares expanse of research experience in media, development studies, health and good governance reforms. She has over 20 academic articles and chapters published in peer-reviewed journals and books. She has also consulted for various organizations including Options, FCDO, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USAID, Reboot and Public and Private Development Centre. Jamila is a winner of Open Contracting Society/HIVOS and Kaduna state 2020 Education grants. She is also a respected member of Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN), African Council of Communication Education (ACCE) and the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR). Ibrahim Uba YUSUF, PhD. Fellow

 is the CMPA’s Director, Communications, Outreach and Advocacy. Yusuf also lectures at the Department of Mass Communication, University of Maiduguri. Ibrahim is currently a Cotutelle PhD candidate at the University of Maiduguri and University of Hildesheim, Germany. His PhD thesis, fully sponsored by DAAD, focused on the contribution of culture industry to peace building through Hausa home videos in parts of northern Nigeria. He has worked in Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) as a translator, presenter, and reporter and served as the pioneer Manager of the Nigerian military radio station used in the counter-insurgency and terrorism campaign. He teaches broadcasting and film related courses. Ibrahim is interested in qualitative researches, media and conflict management, peace building, broadcasting, film studies and Islam and media. Ibrahim is also the media consultant of Borno State Emergency Management Agency. He is a member of different professional bodies such as Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN), African Council of Communication Education (ACCE), Association of Media and Communication Researchers of Nigeria (AMCRON) and Nigerian Institute of Translators and Interpreters (NITI). Idris DAHIRU, PhD. Fellow

is the CMPA’s Director, Administration and Finance and he lectures at the Department Business Management, Bayero University. He has worked as a legislative aide in the National Assembly for over 8 years and has vast experience in project management particularly in budget planning and development. Halima Umar SALEH

is a seasoned experienced and efficient multimedia journalist with over 10-year experience of covering global and regional news for both local and international media. She has worked with Voice of Nigeria (VON) and presently working with BBC Hausa as Digital Lead. She is the Treasurer of the Centre for Media, Policy and Accountability (CMPA).
